In 1913, Victoriano Manteiga came to the United States from Cuba and went to work as a “reader,” reading the day’s news to immigrant workers at the Morgan Cigar Factory in Ybor City, a National Historic District in Tampa. In 1922 he founded a newspaper for these workers which now celebrates 100 years of service. Today, Victoriano’s grandson, Patrick Manteiga, is “head” of La Gaceta, the country’s only trilingual newspaper that continues to inform, influence and thrive as it publishes weekly in English. , Spanish and Italian.
