Are exam scores important? I like to think so when I write reviews, but when people start getting mad at Metacritic scores, it’s best to remember that it’s just a number, maaan. So let’s talk instead about the happy side of Metacritic scores, like the annual celebration of who released the highest-rated games of the year.
For 2021, that honor goes to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios division. The company only released five separate games this year (one of which was the console port of Microsoft Flight Simulator), but those games achieved an average score of 87.4. Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, Age of Empires IV and Halo Infinite impressed. (At least one of them also made our Games of the Year list.)
Sony comes in second place with an average rating of 81.3, but with ten separate games launching this year, that second place might not come as much of a surprise. (Destruction All-Stars didn’t really help either.) Many publishers are just above the 80-point average, including Humble Games, Activision Blizzard, Bethesda Softworks, and Capcom.
