A FERMANAGH writer has signed a major two-book deal with one of the biggest publishing houses in the world.
HarperCollins announced last week that it has acquired two novels by Ryan Love, who is from Enniskillen and has family ties across the county. Already, the global publishing house is calling the Fermanagh man “a star in the making”.
“Arthur and Teddy Going Out” tells the story of two unique “going out” experiences and is described by HarperCollins as “a charming feel-good story about the bond between grandfather and grandson.”
At the heart of the story are Arthur Edwards, 79, who has spent his life in the closet but is “finally ready to live the life he never thought he could” and Teddy, 21, who has friends who know he’s gay but aren’t quite ready to tell his family. The two have always been close and “must now rely on each other as they navigate their way through old heartaches and new love while learning to accept who they are”.
Ryan, who currently lives in England, said his own family and experiences provided positive inspiration for the story.
“Family was a huge inspiration in writing Arthur and Teddy Come Out,” he said. “I was very lucky to come out to a loving and tolerant family, which I never take for granted.
“Writing gave me the opportunity to weave together two unique coming out experiences for a united family, who need each other more than ever.
“I never knew any of my grandfathers, but in Arthur I have created the grandparent I think we would all like to know we could turn to and confide in. I hope readers will love sharing Arthur and Teddy’s adventure as much as I wrote it.”
HarperCollins Senior Editor Cicely Aspinall is full of praise for Ryan’s work.
“There’s a wonderfully warm, warm quality to Ryan’s writing and his characters that I was so drawn to,” she said. “It’s a hopeful and uplifting story that will melt even the coldest hearts and make you laugh in the process.
“I know this will inspire people and show that it’s never late to be true to yourself. Ryan is a genre star in the making and I can’t wait for readers to meet Arthur and Teddy!
Ryan said he was “over the moon working with Cicely and the incredible team” at HarperCollins, and said he was blown away by Cicely’s love of characters and understanding of the story.
Anne Perry, of the literary agency KI which represents Ryan, said ‘Arthur and Teddy come out’ was ‘a warm hug of a novel with a lively edge of daring, a coming-of-age novel for ages”.
“Working with Ryan is a joy and Arthur and Teddy hanging out is a delight,” she said. “I missed my train home the night it arrived on submission, because I was too busy reading it to pay attention to the time.”
Arthur and Teddy are Coming Out will be released in hardcover, ebook and audio in April 2023.
