My thought was quickly replaced by the realization that if I returned to the same locale regularly, I wouldn’t be able to travel as widely as I do now. I am an explorer by nature. I seek out new-to-me places to visit so I can wander the business districts, check out local food hangouts, and, of course, stop by any and all quilt shops. The Common Thread
SHOP OWNER Shannon Caldwell ESTABLISHED 2008 SIZE 2,200 square feet MORE INFO? thecommon-thread.com Hikers, wine-lovers, and bluegrass aficionados are just some of the folks who appreciate Dahlonega, Georgia, a town so picturesque that it has served as a set for Hallmark movies. Surrounded by wineries, located at the start of the Appalachian Trail, and replete with festivals that include Bear on the Square in the springtime and Gold Rush Days in the fall, Dahlonega (population about 7,500) has something for everyone. And thanks to The Common Thread, that includes quilters. Shop owner Shannon Caldwell was working as an accountant for her parents’ hardware store when they acquired the building next door. “That’s when things fell into place,” she says. In the 14 years since, the shop has expanded three times—and…

The Shiplap Quilt Shop & Coffee House
SHOP OWNERS Gary and Kristin Rurup ESTABLISHED 2021 SIZE 1,700 square feet MORE INFO? theshiplapquiltshop.com The Shiplap Quilt Shop & Coffee House has a knack for pulling people inside, both quilters and those who have never sat down at a sewing machine. All are attracted by the store’s modern farmhouse inventory, inspiring vignettes, and strawberry rhubarb fritters made fresh daily. Gary and Kristin Rurup opened the shop just about a year ago in the small town of Tenino, Washington (population about 1,700), located 90 minutes south of Seattle. Quilters from far and wide pop in, lured perhaps by an intriguing Facebook post about wide-back fabrics or a new shipment of yarn, and end up staying awhile, cup of chai in hand, to take it all in. And there’s a lot…
