ANSON SMART “While Australian design is as sophisticated as the best you find anywhere in the world, our lives are more outdoorsy and down to earth. I try to add a loose layer of feeling to spaces to capture how they feel when you are there,” says lifestyle photographer Anson Smart in response to the unique identity of homegrown interiors and his role in creating the images that colour the collective imagination. Smart’s ability to take pictures that express the intangible is evinced by the number of projects he lensed in this issue alone, and while dream assignments include “Georgia O’Keeffe at home in New Mexico; Louise Bourgeois’ New York loft; Irving Penn in his Paris studio; Picasso in the South of France; Halston in his NY house”, he can…

A near-empty nest prompted the owners of this Edwardian Federation in Melbourne’s Malvern East to embark on their dream renovation. Architect Rosanna Ceravolo of Studio Ceravolo was enlisted to improve the rear’s spatial flow and access to the leafy back garden, while fitting the house with new windows and a steel pavilion-esque addition. “The spaces needed to adapt to a new, more luxurious, restful and sensory way of living,” Ceravolo explains. Soft and calming, the palette is infused with warm tones and earthy textures. VOGUE.COM.AU/VOGUE-LIVING Vogue Living @vogueliving Vogue Living…

INTERIOR DESIGN JILLIAN DINKEL “As an American, I’ve been struck by the warmth and openness of Australia’s design community. The emphasis on collaboration and genuine connection makes it an inspiring industry to be part of,” acknowledges principal and creative director Jillian Dinkel, whose talent for sewing stories into the fabric of her interiors stems from an early career in fashion and media. To date, Dinkel’s promising portfolio suggests prestigious estates and period homes are her métier. 2024 HIGHLIGHT Opening a new studio in Woolloomooloo — “it’s been wonderful to create a home base for our clients.” UP NEXT Dinkel’s first heritage multi-residential development, a new build in Mosman, and a country house in the Southern Highlands. LUMINOUS BRILLIANCE
Does the world really need another light or chair? The question could be construed as a rude provocation when put to a designer famous for his incarnations of the most copied artefacts of the modern era. But at 9am on a near-freezing London morning, as the Cypriot-born, London-based designer Michael Anastassiades settles into his desk, dividing focus between a Zoom-active screen and incoming staff, any sense of offence loses to the debate over a non sequitur. “You shouldn’t say, ‘we don’t need another chair therefore we must stop making any more chairs’. I totally support that everything should be allowed,” he says with some admonition that for every great form, a thousand forgettable ones produce in a free market fuelled by greed. “The question needs to be, what is it…
