Welcome
VW gatherings are back! Maybe not the VW show as we know it Jim, but it’s good to see the whole social aspect including enjoying seeing other buses and admiring what people have done to them is emerging from Limbo at last. Inside read all about the Wolfsburg Bus Crew’s gathering in August with nearly 100 buses attending and a small informal Caffeine and Machine meet. Small shoots perhaps after the life we were used to, but a sign of hope and better days to come. September will see some more slightly ambitious events (though still slimmed down) with Stonor Sunday, Kent VW Show and VW Breakout at Santa Pod – and we shall watch with interest how these and others go, and how social distancing and hygiene work at…
Hector A Cautionary Tale
As we drove away from the people we’d rented it from Mark said that holidaying in a nineteen sixties bus was the worse idea I had ever had, but within minutes we were laughing and smiling so much! It turned out to be one of the best holidays had ever taken. From that moment we were totally hooked and our lives changed completely!” Kate Burch and her husband joined the splitscreen van club in the summer of 2012. “The friendly forum gave us lots of help & pointers and the search began. Shortly afterwards, Hector came up for sale and after many emails, pictures and phone calls, a day trip to Manchester was arranged. Everyone said; ‘Don’t buy the first one you see’. So in October 2012 we did. “Hector…

‘Old School’ Westfalia Bay
The history of our bus is varied. I heard that it used to belong to a soccer player who lived in it for a while, and a tale of a cross country trip that was taken in it. Since we’ve owned it, we have been to numerous car shows with our car club Kahiko Kula and enjoy that immensely, but taking it camping is our joy. We try to camp in the bus at least 5 times per year, some are better than others. Being in the woods, in our bus, with our family around us is our happy place. When you are camping in the great state of Washington, keep an eye out for the tie dyed top through the trees. We bought the bus in 2012, while my…

I’ve owned my first VWT2 crossover 1972 for just over 12 months now, but loved my dads T2 back in the eighties. In your how to section is it possible to cover reconditioning of clocks and gauges. My odometer struggles to record mileage, obviously down to worn parts, if it’s a DIY fix it would be an interesting article to cover. Many thanks, David Brown • The reconditioning of gauges is something I have looked into, but I realised I could only go so far before I needed spares and specialist knowledge. Speedy Cables (https://speedycables.com) are…

Email editor@volkswagencamper.co.uk Address Camper Mail, VW Camper & Commercial, The Old School Higher Kinnerton Chester CH4 9AJ Ice Cream Van Hello David I really enjoyed reading about the mobile pub box van in #151. Although I was at the Bundwehr myself, I never had the pleasure of eating from a T3 field kitchen. MAN trucks were used as field kitchens, at least in northern Germany. But you never stop learning and the Bundeswehr had a lot of vehicles hidden in depots. The T3 box van with sales flap was used for many things in Germany, including mobile shops, ice cream vans, coffee and cake stalls etc. and I have enclosed a couple of examples. The ice cream van is still in use, but the others are now no longer used…
