Pursuit of excellence
THE trailer of the streaming movie, Test, was unveiled recently. It is about the lives of a cricketer, a teacher and a scientist that are intertwined and set for the ultimate test. Saravanan and Kumudha navigate the complexities of marriage while pursuing their own dreams, and Arjun wrestles with the fine line between professional and personal choices alongside his wife Padma, who protects their personal space. The film stars R Madhavan, Nayanthara, Siddharth and Meera Jasmine. Madhavan, who essays the role of Saravanan, said: “Test captures the relentless pursuit of excellence and the sacrifices made to protect one’s legacy. “Collaborating with this fantastic team, and my bro and debut director S Sashikanth has been an incredible journey. My experience with Netflix has always been super delightful. I cannot wait to…
Praise for brother
ACTOR and singer Indrajith Sukumaran, who is the elder brother of Prithviraj Sukumaran, has heaped praise on his sibling. Indrajith said: “I believe we worked on seven or eight films, but Lucifer was my first collaboration with him as an actor-director. It was wonderful because he has very good clarity about what he wants out of everyone. “He’s got the script in his mind, he’s got the dialogues in his mind, he’s got every character trait in his mind, so he’s very clear about how he wants his characters to behave, to talk, to move, so that’s quite easy for an actor.” Communication was the key highlight, shared Indrajith, who worked in films such as Ezhamathe Varavu, Amar Akbar Anthony, Virus, Halal Love Story and Kurup. L2: Empuraan is an…
A modern love story worth watching
Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam (Why is the moon angry with me) is a modern love story that cannot be missed. The movie stars Pavish Narayan, who makes his debut, child actress Anikha Surendran and yesteryear icons R Sarathkumar, Saranya Ponvannan and Aadukalam Naren. The film dramatically starts off with heartbroken Prabhu (Narayan) whose parents want him to settle down and get married. He agrees and to his surprise, the girl he meets is Preeti (Priya Prakash Varrier), who was his classmate. Like every modern-day arranged marriage, they ask for a week to get to know each other before they agree to anything. However, their decision of marriage is based on the love story of Prabhu’s first love Nila (Surendran). It is a classic teenage love story. However, things…
Sid Sriram to launch ‘Shivanar’, inspired by Thiruppugazh
Sid Sriram's song, Shivanar, inspired by Thiruppugazh, will be launched tomorrow with a live interview with the artist. The Thiruppugazh (meaning “holy praise”) is a revered collection of Tamil hymns composed by Saint Arunagirinathar in the 14th century. It is a cornerstone of Tamil devotional literature, dedicated to Lord Muruga, the Hindu deity of valour, wisdom and protection. “The song taps into a deeply-sacred Tamil heritage, combining profound meanings with Sid’s artistic interpretation,” said Revathi Pillay, the youth ambassador of the NPO, Care for Africa and representative of Kamakoti Mediaworks. “Each verse from the Thiruppugazh is laden with intricate metaphors, vivid imagery and philosophical depth. It is renowned not only for its spiritual significance but also for its unique poetic structure, rhythm and melodies, which have enchanted devotees for centuries.…
A missed opportunity for Salman Khan
Movie review: Sikandar Cast: Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna and Kajal Aggarwal Director: AR Murugadoss Rating: 7/10 Salman Khan’s Eid release Sikandar might have had a great opening weekend, and will no doubt have diehard fans flocking to see it, but as a critic’s movie it does not leave a lasting impression. Although director AR Murugadoss, who excelled with Aamir Khan in Ghajini, is given an innovative theme, he fails to develop it well enough. Salman also relies largely on the action sequences, where more often than not he asks his team to hold back, while he fights off over a dozen armed goons singlehandedly. As the Raja of Rajkot, aka Sikandar, who has supposedly unlimited wealth with which he can influence anyone; Salman delivers some cliched dialogues and sudden…
Far too much of tossing around the Tamil eisteddfod in SA
OVER the weekend, I attended the opening event of the 2025 Tamil eisteddfod hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Tamil Vedic Society Provincial Body. It was largely a melancholic affair for me, punctuated with some moments of happiness. While the RB Chetty Hall in Phoenix, in Durban, was filled with zealous Tamil patriots, it was the welcome address by chairperson Kogie Moorthi that got me downhearted and despairing. There is no funding for the eisteddfod. Moorthi said: “Today marks the official opening of our 62nd Tamil eisteddfod. The recent years have been very difficult. We receive no funding from any organisation. The Tamil eisteddfod is the only platform we have to nurture the talents of our children in iyal, isai and nadagam (literature, music and drama). Let us not lose this event.”…
