NIKON COOLPIX P1100 Struggling to get that perfect zoom shot from far away? Worry no more, as Nikon has just launched the COOLPIX P1100 with an absurdly strong optical zoom of 125x. That makes it the world’s most powerful optical zoom, perfect whether you want to shoot the surface of the Moon or capture a gnat’s fingernail in superb detail. And you can get even closer to the action thanks to its 250x digital zoom capability. It carries on the legacy of Nikon’s P1000, which shared its monstrous 125x zoom rating and 24-3000mm focal length (35mm equivalent). It’s rounded out by a f/2.8 NIKKOR lens, a 16MP backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and support for video footage up to 4K at 30fps. What’s new this time is an improved Bird-Watching mode, a…

Editor’s letter
It’s fair to say this month’s edition of T3 is one of the more ‘adventurous’ issues we’ve put together. It’s pretty spot-on timing though – March is in full swing so you can release yourself from your winter hibernation state and start figuring out what you’re going to do now that the big ball of fire in the sky is on your side. Inspired by this glimpse of warmer times, your mindset might be to plan ahead for future travels. Our main feature this issue – Outdoor Travel Tech (p29) – will help you achieve that, showcasing the wealth of tech available to upgrade any trip, no matter how you plan to get there, and what you intend to do: whether it’s an epic mountain hike, big city explore, or…

1 iPHONE 16E • From £599, apple.com/uk In a most decidedly un-Apple move, the Cupertino company has retooled its budget phone offering into something that doesn’t – at least at release time – feel like the pauper’s alternative. The throwback Touch ID button (and resultant chin) of the prior iPhone SE range is gone, replaced by a full-face 6.1-inch OLED screen with Face ID functionality, for a start. Look at this from the front and it’s very much a current-gen iPhone, at least if you discount the notch that sits in place of the more modern Dynamic Island. A glance at the black or white back does reveal one big deviation from the main line, in the form of a single camera. There’s some hand-waving happening around it, of course,…
Why getting back to basics is in vogue
Why do we have a growing and seemingly unstoppable love for lo-fi tech? While it’s customary to associate technology with the appeal of the new, the better, the higher resolution, faster processing, more intelligent and more sophisticated, there’s a burgeoning branch of tech that’s the opposite. It celebrates quirky, often more basic technologies, and revels in their idiosyncrasies. I was reminded of this recently while testing Fujifilm’s latest in their very successful range of Instax cameras, the Instax WIDE Evo Hybrid. It encourages you to build on the usual slightly fuzzy, hit-and-miss fun of instant photography by introducing all sorts of extra imperfections into your snaps, from lens flare to light leaks and colour shifts. There are dozens to choose from and you can alter their strength by rotating the…
